The Advanced Placement (AP) Program offers high school students college-level coursework approved by the College Board. AP courses develop critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills, preparing students for the demands of college.
Benefits of AP:
- College Credit/Advanced Placement: Earned by passing the AP exam in May (credit depends on scores and college policies).
- Academic Rigor: AP courses demonstrate a challenging curriculum, strengthening college applications.
- Weighted Grades: AP classes can boost GPA due to their recognized difficulty.
Taking AP courses makes students more competitive in college admissions and helps build skills essential for academic success.

Who should take AP classes?
The AP program is for students who possess intellectual curiosity and who seek intellectual growth. Reading and homework assignment expectations for AP classes are extensive. Students are expected to perform at the college level, particularly in the areas of writing, reading for analysis and synthesis, and test taking. Term papers and class projects are also expected students are cautioned to consider what impact the combination of employment, extracurricular activities, home responsibilities and course load might have on their academic success. Students interested in Advanced Placement courses should consult with their class teacher, or counselor.
When should I take AP classes?
At Antelope High School, we ask all AP students to commit to taking the course exam to boost their chance of earning a score that translates to college credit. Through extensive research, College Board and representatives for the Advanced Placement Program found that students who register for exams in the fall term instead of the spring term increased their scores of 3 or above across all significant groups.
